Parking lots everywhere are teaming with crossover SUVs, afraid to get dirty. They're equipped with puny engines, low ride height and lack a four-wheel drive transfer case. Not the type of vehicle for heavy lifting. For a real, capable SUV, you need the 2017 Ford Expedition.

Changes for 2017

Defying all odds, the Ford Expedition has bucked the "cute ute" trend and remained a body-on-frame SUV. For 2017, the Ford Expedition carries on unchanged from the previous model year.

Trim Levels and Body Styles

The 2017 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV with seating for up to eight passengers. There's plenty of room for all your gear too, since the Ford Expedition offers best-in-class cargo space for an SUV. When properly equipped, the Ford Expedition offers 42.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up and 130.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. There are four available trim levels: XLT, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum. All trim levels can be had in either standard or extended-length (EL).

A healthy dose of standard equipment is supplied on all models. This includes automatic headlights, LED fog lights, running boards, a roof rack, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, heated mirrors with puddle lamps, air-conditioning, a power driver seat, power pedals, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Ford's Sync Infotainment system with a 4.2-inch screen, Bluetooth, a sound system with CD player, satellite radio, USB, AUX and rear audio controls.

A rugged SUV is defined by its powertrain and the 2017 Ford Expedition doesn't disappoint. Under the expansive hood, you'll find a 3.5L six-cylinder engine, supplemented by twin turbochargers. This combination is good for 365-hp and 420 ft. lb. - enough grunt to tackle any job. Power is sent through a 6-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. Optional four-wheel drive available.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Having a six-cylinder engine under the hood means you save at the pump. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is *18 miles per gallon combined highway/city driving for standard length, rear-wheel drive models. The 3.5L engine is also more than cable of hauling all your toys, with a healthy towing capacity of 9,200 pounds.

The Ford Expedition is also ready, should you decided to engage in a stop light drag race with a Fast and Furious Honda (not that we condone such a thing). Acceleration from 0 to 60 is just 6.5 seconds.

Vehicles with seating for eight, such as the Ford Expedition, are made for family outings. The 2017 Ford Expedition is a top safety pick SUV, which means it will keep your entire family safe. All models come standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, Ford MyKey speed control, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. All of this is good enough to earn a top five-star rating in government crash tests.

The 2017 Ford Expedition proves there's no need to compromise comfort and convenience for capability. This rig can do it all, from pulling a work load to hauling the kids to soccer practice. Take one for a test drive. You'll find out what it's like to drive a real SUV with all the modern amenities.
