It wasn't until the Fusion Hybrid entered its second-generation in 2012 as a 2013 model year that the plug-in version we now know as the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi entered the market. Although there's a growing number of plug-in hybrid mid-size sedans in the marketplace and more being added all the time, the Fusion Energi makes a strong claim for being the very best. It's hardly surprising though, as the regular gasoline powered Fusion is pretty much the standard by which all contenders in its segment are judged by, so building a PHEV on such a tremendous platform was always likely to prove a success.
As this is now the fifth model year for the Fusion in its current generation, 2017 sees it benefitting from something of a mid-cycle refresh.
Exterior enhancements for the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi include: LED headlights and tail lamps; a new front fascia that incorporates a wider and more angular grille, chrome embellishments and LED fog lamps; a new rear fascia and lower decklid and a set of redesigned 17-inch wheels.
The improvements are not reserved for the exterior though, as the inside sees the introduction of a reworked center console with a Jaguar-esque rotary-style gear selector. The front cup holders have now been relocated so a longer arm rest can be added and to allow for better access to the open storage area in the lower dashboard. The manufacturer has also seen fit to incorporate its much-improved Sync 3 infotainment system with navigation as part of the standard equipment with Energi models. Anyone looking at the top Platinum trim will see the availability of new interior appointments that now include creamy quilted leather seats, and stitched, thickly padded leather in antiqued Cocoa on the top of the dash and on the steering wheel.
What hasn't changed with the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi is the front-wheel-drive, plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a 118 horsepower electric motor with a 141 horsepower, 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder for a combined output of 188 horsepower. The Fusion Energi can go as fast as 85 mph in its electric-only mode, but unlike with the non-plug in hybrid, there's no need to feather-foot the throttle to avoid the gas engine getting involved during normal acceleration. The EV mode of the Fusion Energi allows you to choose to restrict the gasoline engine's participation to the most extreme power demands only, such as circumstances like passing another vehicle on a steep hill.
There are three different trim levels available to choose between with the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi, which start with the SE and then go to the Titanium and top-of-the-line Platinum trim, but even the entry level SE model comes extremely well equipped.
Standard features and equipment in the SE include: dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control, a rotary gearshift dial, active noise control, hill start assist, three 12-volt power points, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, remote start, Ford MyKey, an 11-speaker premium audio system and plenty more.
As for the all-important fuel economy figures, the EPA rates the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi at 38 mpg combined, or 88 MPGe, with an all-electric range on a full charge of 19 miles.*
