2019 Ford Edge vs 2019 Toyota Highlander

Out of the dozens of mid-size SUVs on the market, the Ford Edge and Toyota Highlander are two of the best. Both vehicles offer class-leading capability, versatility and style. Which one is right for you?

For 2019, the Ford Edge gets an array of upgrades including a refreshed exterior, a brand-new sporty ST model, a new transmission and additional standard equipment. The 2019 Toyota Highlander, on the other hand, receives only minor exterior updates. Let’s find out how the two SUVs stack up against one another. img

Design

Both competing SUVs are available in a range of trim levels. The 2019 Ford Edge comes in SE, SEL, Titanium and the all-new ST model. Meanwhile, the 2019 Toyota Highlander comes in six variants: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited and Limited Platinum. 

The two SUVs are both aesthetically pleasing, sporting modern body lines and eye-catching wheel options. But the sporty Edge ST blows the Highlander – and nearly every other midsize SUV – away with a low-slung performance-tuned suspension, large-diameter wheels and a black mesh grille.

Large families will appreciate the eight-passenger interior of the Highlander. The Toyota SUV also offers slightly more volume for occupants (145 cu. ft.) than the Ford (114 cu. ft.).

When it comes to cargo volume, though, the Edge reigns supreme with 39.2 cu. ft. of space with the rear seats up and 73.4 cu. ft. with them folded flat. By comparison, the Highlander offers only 13.8 cu. ft. with its seats up and 42.3 cu. ft. with them folded flat.

Performance

The Edge and Highlander each come with multiple engine options. There are two choices available in the Ford SUV: an EcoBoost 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (250 hp) and the EcoBoost 2.7L turbocharger V6 (335 hp) found in the in ST model. Both mate to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard; all-wheel drive is available.

Three engine options are offered in the Highlander: a 2.7L four-cylinder (185 hp), a 3.5L V6 (295 hp) and a hybrid powertrain. The base LE model has a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the rest of the lineup comes with an 8-speed. Front wheel-drive comes standard and all-wheel drive is optional, except on the hybrid model where four-wheel traction is the norm.

While the Highlander puts up a good fight, nothing can compete with the potent Edge ST and its EcoBoost engine. The high-performance Ford out-powers, out-handles and outdoes the competition in every way.

Features

The mid-size SUV segment has become increasingly competitive. So, it comes as no surprise that the Edge and Highlander both pack plenty of standard equipment. A laundry list of features – such as a touchscreen media display, built-in Wi-Fi and automatic wipers – come standard on the SE model Ford. Also, onboard, you’ll find the Co-Pilot360 driver assistance suite complete with Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist and Automatic Braking.

And how about the Toyota? Much like the Edge, the Highlander packs a generous helping of standard equipment. Key features include a touchscreen media display, heated mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. A collection of advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, Lane Keep Assist and forward collision warning, are bundled into the Toyota Safety Sense suite.

While both SUVs offer a long list of features, many aspects of the Ford were just updated this year, making its technology cutting-edge.

Which should you choose?

Without a doubt, the Highlander is a great SUV. But unless you’re transporting the soccer team regularly, and need eight seats, the Edge is the better choice. The Ford SUV offers greater versatility, more power – and perhaps most importantly – it’s more fun to drive.
