2020 Explorer

The Ford Explorer was already a formidable and popular midsize crossover SUV, but with its first major redesign in nine model years, the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer has taken the nameplate to another level entirely. Ford hasn’t thrown the old model out and started again from scratch as that wasn't necessary, but what the Blue Oval has done with the 2020 Ford Explorer is to improve it in just about every conceivable way, and here's how the company's done it.

Exterior styling

Even though it had been around in more or less the same design for a good while, the Explorer was still an attractive, stylish and desirable SUV. However, the all-new sixth-generation model is an absolute beauty. Although it's very much unibody crossover, the styling of the new Explorer still pays a little respect to the vehicle's truck heritage. Perhaps a little unusually in the current market, this is one crossover that's evolved in a way that's a little less carlike than it was before. Stocky, chiselled and imposing are just some of the words that spring to mind. Well done Ford.

Trim levels

Just like the smaller Ford Edge, the new Explorer now gets a sporty ST trim level, although it's not the range-topper here in the Explorer family. The range starts off with the affordable, but still impressive, XLT, and then we have the Limited, the ST and the range-topping Platinum. Prices start from $36,675 for the base XLT, while the ST costs from $54,740 and the Platinum starts from $58,250. There is another Explorer in the shape of the Limited Hybrid, which is treated as a separate model on the Ford website and costs from $48,130.

Powertrains

Most 2020 Explorers are likely to feature the base 2.3-liter turbo-four, which in this case develops a very useful 30 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The hybrid option uses a 3.3-liter V-6 engine as part of a modular ten-speed transmission gas/electric system, which then gets the Explorer 318 combined horsepower and 322 lb.-ft. of torque. The non-hybrid Platinum and ST models feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, which in Platinum trim offers 365 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. The ST lives up to its sportier billing with a high-output twin-turbo version of the 3.0-liter V-6, and then you have a lively 400 horses and 415 lb.-ft. of torque to play with. Apart from the all-wheel-drive-only ST, all models are standard rear-wheel-drive, with the Intelligent 4WD system as an available option.

Features and equipment

Base XLT models come very well equipped with tri-zone climate control, lane-keep assist, MyKey, power features, three 12v power sockets, remote start, reverse sensing system, a rearview camera, FordPass Connect 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and seating for six people. The top-of-the-range Platinum is a rival for some luxury models, and the ST inevitably takes the Explorer in a sportier direction, both inside and out.

Safety

It's not been crash-tested yet, but we should expect the 2020 Explorer to score well as it comes with or offers all the safety features demanding family buyers want and expect to see. All models get Ford's Co-Pilot360 system, which includes features like blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, hill start assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
