Buying a New Ford: Sedan or Hatchback

Buying a new Ford sedan or hatchback – which is right for you?

It can be tough to find a worthwhile car in a world saturated with crossovers and sport utilities. Fortunately, Ford still offers a lineup of admirable sedans and hatchbacks – at least for now. The automaker has announced it will soon do away with many of its cars. Three of the most popular current offerings are the Fiesta, Fusion, and Focus. Get them while you can.

Buying a 2018 Ford Sedan or Ford Hatchback

There’s no wrong choice when it comes to selecting a new Ford Sedan or Hatchback. The decision depends on your budget and lifestyle.

2018 Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is a sub-compact car offered as both a sedan and hatchback. For 2018, the two variants are offered in S, SE and Titanium trim levels. There’s also a performance-oriented ST model, available only as a hatchback.

Outside, the Fiesta presents a modern, European look. A bold front grille and sculpted body lines compliment both the four-door and 5-door model. The hatchback variant is particularly handsome, especially in ST trim.

The high-quality cabin boasts seating for five passengers, along with available ambient lighting. Occupants stay connected with the SYNC3 infotainment system, complete with AppleLink, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

An efficient 1.6L engine powers SE, SE, and Titanium trim levels. The rest of the powertrain consists of either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic sending power to the front wheels. As for the ST, it comes with an exclusive EcoBoost 1.6L engine (197 hp and 202 lb-ft.) mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

2018 Ford Fusion

Style and sophistication blend seamlessly in the midsize, Ford Fusion sedan. Five trim levels are offered: S, SE, Titanium, Platinum, and Sport. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid Energi models are available as well.

Looking at the Fusion, Ford’s signature wide-mouth grille immediately catches your attention. After that, it’s the elegant body lines and LED lighting.

Inside, the five-passenger cabin is awash in first-class materials. A rotary dial acts as a gear shift, while the SYNC3 infotainment system provides connectivity.

A full range of powertrain options are available, from high-performance to extreme efficiency. The base engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder. A step up from that, you’ll find an EcoBoost 1.5L four-cylinder and then an EcoBoost 2.0L four-cylinder. The top-of-the-line powerplant is the EcoBoost 2.7L V6, found in the Sport model.

Across the board, all models come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is offered on select trim levels.

As for the Fusion Energi, it’s available as either a traditional, or plug-in hybrid. The layout consists of a 2.0L gasoline engine paired with an electric motor.

2018 Ford Focus

The Ford Focus is a highly-acclaimed compact car available as both a hatchback and sedan. For 2018, six trim levels can be had: S, SE, SEL, Titanium, ST, and RS. An all-electric model, simply called Electric, is also available.

Both four-door and five-door variants sport a handsomely modern exterior. Hatchback ST and RS models get a full-on performance treatment with aerodynamic enhancements.

Moving inside, you’ll find an interior that’s both accommodating and spacious. High-tech features abound, such as the SYNC3 infotainment system and Active Park Assist.

Like the other cars in Ford’s lineup, the Focus is offered with a variety of powertrain choices. The base engine is a 1.0L three-cylinder. A step up from that, you’ll find a 2.0L four-cylinder and then an EcoBoost 2.0L four-cylinder. Sporty ST and RS models pack an Ecoboost 2.3L four-cylinder (350 hp and 350 lb-ft.).

Most models are front-wheel drive with the option of either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The exceptions are the ST, which comes with a 6-speed manual, and the RS with its 6-speed manual and all-wheel drive.

As you’d probably guessed, the Electric model is powered by an all-electric motor juiced by a lithium-ion battery pack.
