For decades, crossovers and SUVs have been edging out the once-popular family sedan. Now, Ford’s CEO Jim Hackett has announced the company will phase out most of its North American four-door lineup. What should you buy once the Ford Fiesta sedan, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus are gone?

Ford SUV and truck sales currently make up 90 percent of Ford’s North American sales. Sedans, on the other hand, have been costing the company $800 million per year in losses. It’s been a long time coming, but four-doors are on the way out. These alternatives will get you through once the inevitable happens.

Ford hatchback models

So far, Ford hasn’t said it plans to dispose of its hatchback lineup. That means the 5-door variants of the Focus and Fiesta will be around – at least for now.  

Fiesta: The Ford Fiesta is a subcompact car that’s big on value and efficiency. Its sloping roofline provides plenty of room for five passengers and cargo, making it an excellent sedan alternative.

Focus: Likewise, the compact Ford Focus offers ample space for five occupants and their gear. Its longer wheelbase makes it even more versatile than the small fiesta.
