2020 Ford Explorer Competitive Comparison

2020 Explorer

Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are becoming some of the most popular automobiles on the road today and Ford Motor Company has been on the fortunate end of creating the best-selling SUV of all time. Born nearly 30 years ago, the Ford Explorer has long been known for surpassing many of its popular rivals. Thanks to a complete redesign, the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer is sure to continue on the top of the SUV food chain.

2020 Ford Explorer vs. Honda Pilot

New from the ground up, each new 2020 Ford Explorer in Southfield looks nothing like the outgoing model and now switches from front-wheel drive to a rear-wheel-drive platform. Unlike its top competitor, the Honda Pilot, the Explorer didn’t play it safe with an instantly recognizable design. Instead, this vehicle looks like no other vehicle in the range and its side profile is dominated by oversized wheel arches and wheels. This all-new SUV also offers the appearance of a Range Rover, thanks to a less boxy style and an all new angled roof.

The stylish and powerful new Ford Explorer is powered by either a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine that offers up to 300 HP and 310 lb.-ft. of torque and a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 that bumps up the power to 365 HP and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. Thanks to the added power, the towing capacity for the all-new Ford Explorer is also higher than most. In fact, the 2020 Ford Explorer offers up to 5,600 lbs., when properly equipped of towing capacity, which is 600 lbs. more than the competition.

Inside a Top Selling Ford SUV

While both the 2020 Ford Explorer and the Honda Pilot feature a standard sliding second-row that tilts forward, the Explorer offers a bit more second-row legroom and headroom than the Pilot. Inside the Explorer, everything is dominated by the large 10.1-inch touchscreen that stands out a bit more and offers more built-in technology than most in its class. Despite seating one less passenger than the Pilot, the inside of the Explorer feels like a bit more like a luxurious Lincoln with quality materials, wireless smart phone charging capability and less clunky plastic than that of the Pilot. Best of all, the all-new redesigned Explorer also offers up to 87.8 of cargo room, which is a lot more than the competition.

While other SUV’s like the Honda Pilot also include some of the latest and greatest safety features, built-in advanced safety technology is where the all-new Ford Explorer really shines. Along with Ford's Co-Pilot 360 driver-assistance tech, which includes blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist, this Ford SUV also includes adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree surround camera for safer parking and reverse driving as well as forward collision warning with dynamic brake support.
