After a seven-year hiatus, the Ford Ranger is back and ready to take on the competition. One of the Ranger’s chief rivals is the formidable GMC Canyon. Both are capable and comfortable trucks – which one is right for you?

2019 Ford Ranger vs 2019 GMC Canyon

Unlike the 2019 GMC Canyon, which is a carryover from last year, the 2019 Ford Ranger is an all-new model. Nonetheless, both trucks are segment leaders that deserve to go head-to-head. Here’s how the two compare.

Design

For 2019, the Ford Ranger is available in either SuperCab (extended cab) or SuperCrew body styles. Three trim levels are offered: XL, XLT and Lariat. Meanwhile, the GMC Canyon comes in either extended cab or Crew-cab body styles. Trim levels include SL, Base, SLE, SLT and Denali.

Indeed, both are handsome trucks. But because the Ranger is brand-new – and the Canyon is a carryover – the Ford truck features a more modern design. Highlights include a power dome hood, wide grille opening and rounded wheel arches.

Inside, both crew-cab pickups offer plenty of cabin space. On higher trim levels (especially the Denali), the GMC offers a more luxurious interior experience. However, the uncluttered cabin of the Ranger is more stylish and functional thanks to its fresh design.

Performance

When it comes to pickups, it’s what’s under the hood that counts. While the Ranger and Canyon both come standard with four-cylinder power, only the Ford engine comes topped with a turbocharger. Forced induction gives the EcoBoost powerplant an output of 270 hp and 310 lb. By comparison, the naturally-aspirated engine in the Canyon only turns out 200 hp and 191 lb.-ft.

Furthermore, the Ford comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, whereas the standard gearbox in the GMC is a 6-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive comes standard on both trucks; four-wheel drive is available as an option.

Features

Like most base model pickups, the Ranger XL and the Canyon SL are built for work. As such, they come with select amenities like a backup camera and power accessories. Additional conveniences are kept to a minimum to keep cost down.

On the other hand, the high-end Ranger Lariat and GMC Denali models come stocked with amenities like onboard Wi-Fi and heated front seats. But the Ford comes with more driver assistance functions available in the Co-Pilot 360 suite. The lineup includes Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keeping Assist, Cross Traffic Alert and adaptive cruise control – all of which are unavailable on the GMC.

The Ranger is built for adventure with an available FX4 Off-Road Package and Trail Control, which is a type of off-road cruise control. Also, the Ford pickup knows how to have fun, thanks to the SYNC infotainment center and an available Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Meanwhile, the Canyon carves a name for itself with un-truck-like amenities such as a premium interior with advanced noise reduction and a soft-touch instrument panel.

Which should you choose?

If you’re looking for an upscale pickup that focuses on creature comforts, the GMC Canyon may be the truck for you. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a truck that’s comfortable, capable and adventure-ready, you’ll want to check out the 2019 Ford Ranger, available at Avis Ford.
