Midsize SUVs are big business all around the world these days, but the Ford Edge is one that's particularly successful in both the US and over in Europe. It's one of the few mass-market models that sell on both sides of the Atlantic without resorting to a different name and major alterations to appeal to a different audience, so let's take a look at the 2020 Ford Edge to see why this particular model is proving so successful for the Blue Oval.

Exterior styling

While the 2020 Ford Edge design is bold, sleek and sports an aerodynamic shape, the midsize Ford looks just the way most people seem to want a modern, contemporary SUV to look. There's a sporty element to its styling and there's no getting away from the fact it's an SUV. It doesn’t look like a tall wagon-like some rivals, and in the right trim and the right color combination, it can even look a little futuristic. Regardless, the Edge is a design masterpiece.

Trim levels

Buyers have four different trim levels to choose from in the 2020 Ford Edge lineup, which are the SE, SEL, Titanium and the ST. The ST is obviously the top-of-the-range model as far as price goes, but you could look at the Titanium and the ST joint range-toppers that go in different directions. The Titanium is all about comfort and luxury, while the ST takes a big lean towards the sportier side of things, the ST isn't exactly low on luxury and comfort either.

Engines

Ford dropped one of the engine options for the Edge last year, but the two that are left are the ones everyone wanted anyway. The two powerplants that are left represent a clear choice. If you want a capable, efficient family hauler that can handle anything you’re likely to ask of it, the standard 2.0-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo is a four-cylinder unit that gets the job done, and then some. It puts out a very healthy 250 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to the front or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

If you want the more powerful engine you'll have to go for the ST trim, but it would be illegal if the sporty ST had anything else under the hood than its standard 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6. If you want performance you certainly get it here with 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent exclusively to all four wheels through that eight-speed automatic transmission.

Features and equipment

Entry-level SE models compete well on price with rivals, but they're anything but sparse as standard equipment now includes cruise control, power features, air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD player, Bluetooth connectivity, in-car wireless data, Sync 3 infotainment system, satellite radio, LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers. Titanium models pile on the features with leather upholstery, HD radio, a hands-free tailgate, wireless smartphone charging, a premium B&O audio system and remote start. The ST adds to that with a sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch alloys, sports seats, and that fabulous V-6 twin-turbo engine with standard all-wheel drive.
