Compare 2020 Ford Explorer Models

The 2020 model year anticipates the first major redesign of this impressive full-size crossover SUV, and it's not difficult to fall for the charms of the impressive styling of this thoroughly modern new version of the Ford Explorer. But if you’re thinking of buying a 2020 Ford Explorer, which trim level should you go for and what does each model come standard with? Let's take a look and compare them to help you decide between them.

XLT

The XLT is the entry-level model and entry point to the Explorer lineup for 2020, but you could be forgiven for thinking it was a mid-range model. The engine under the hood is a 2.3-liter turbo-four that develops an impressive 300 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to rear wheels in standard form through Ford's exceptional 10-speed automatic transmission. However, there's also the option of a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 turbo, and a hybrid based around a 3.3-liter non-turbo V-6.

Nothing about the XLT feels entry-level, and quite unusually, it could well turn out to be the most popular version of the new Explorer. Standard features include Ford Sync 3 infotainment, a power liftgate, LED headlights, an 8.0-inch display, and a suite of active safety features, 18-inch alloys, tri-zone climate control, heated mirrors, power front seats, keyless ignition, rear parking sensors and seven seats.

Limited

Limited trims are often top-of-the-range offerings, but here it's only one up from the base. Even so, the Limited ramps up the tech features with standard heated mirrors, power front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, keyless ignition, configurable daytime running lights, forward sensing system, ambient lighting, a rearview camera, Lane-Keeping Assist, Lane-Keeping Alert and Driver Alert, a heated steering wheel and Ford MyKey.

ST

As well as some very appealing and sporty exterior and interior styling cues, the main element that sets the ST apart is the standard powerplant. Like the Platinum we'll get to in a moment, the ST comes standard with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, but the ST gets a more powerful version that develops 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. Other notable ST features include 20-inch machined alloy wheels, a premium B&O audio system, voice-activated navigation and FordPass Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Platinum

The Explorer Platinum is a bona fide range-topper in every sense, although it 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 is tuned down a little from the ST but still produces 365 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. Just about every feature you can think of within reason is standard with the Limited, including the likes of leather upholstery, adaptive LED headlights; rear automatic emergency braking; heated and cooled seats; a 110-volt AC outlet, adaptive cruise control; memory settings for the seat, mirrors, and pedals; adaptive cruise control; Active park-assist 2.0; and a twin-panel moonroof. Of course, all that comes on top of the many features you already get in the ST trim. However, the interior and exterior design of the ST is overtly sporty, while the Platinum is all-out luxury.
